DEPICTION OF HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENT RELATIONSHIP IN BEWILDERMENT (2021) NOVEL BY RICHARD POWERS
Over the last few years, environmental issues have increased. Therefore, it is necessary for humans to start a commitment to maintain the stability of nature. The presence of this research is very important as a medium for readers to build and create awareness to protect nature. The objectives of the research are to describe the way the environment is depicted in Bewilderment and explain the relationship between humans and the environment that is reflected in Bewilderment. Furthermore, this research used Greg Garrard‘s ecocriticism concepts as the main theory of this research. To conduct this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research, for the data source of this research is a novel that contains 326 pages, written by Richard Powers entitled Bewilderment and published in 2021 by W.W. Norton & Company in the United States. The results of this research showed that the areas around Theo and Robin were depicted as wilderness, dwelling, and animal. Based on the condition of the environment around the main character, the researcher found that the relationship between humans and the environment in Bewilderment were divided into two
categories, namely positive and negative relationships. The positive relationship between human and environment can be seen from the main character‘s attitude toward nature that kept the wilderness, dwelling and animal area in a stable condition. Meanwhile, the negative relationship can be seen from the savagery of nature that took the main character‘s life.
