This study aimed to find out the student interest and the influence factors in learning English at SMP Negeri 22 Samarinda. Then, this study applied the descriptive qualitative method design. This study involved ninth-grade students and one English teacher from SMP Negeri 22 Samarinda. Moreover, the technique of data collection was taken from the interview and the observation. The findings showed that the students showed interest in the form of 1) feeling-related valences represented by enjoying and being happy during the learning process, being enthusiastic when doing the activities, and students’ commit to learn English; 2) value-related valences represented by their believed that English was very important and are relevant to their future. Meanwhile, students’ physical health has an impact on how interested they are in studying English in class, and book-based instruction usually makes lessons simple. In addition, the results of the influencing factors in learning English are supported with the results of student interviews which found that parents' specific beliefs about their children's successes in education influence the students' interest in learning English. Besides that, the teacher's strategy, teacher competence, teacher’s ability to understand the student's needs, and teacher attitude also generate the students' interest in learning. Because the purposes of this research are to find out the students’ interest in learning English and the influencingfactors, it is recommended that future researcher utilizing a mixed-methods strategy to provide a more comprehensive understanding and more detailed explanations.
