Non-Binary As Seen in Mason Deaver's Novel I Wish You All The Best
This study explores at how Mason Deaver's book I Wish You All the Best portrays non-binary identity from the character Benjamin's perspective. The study uses a qualitative method to examine Benjamin's portrayal by combining gender studies by Butler with a queer theory framework by Carter, Barker, and Iantaffi. The study looks at Benjamin's conflicts and characterization using Brown's conflict typology and Gill's categorization description. Seven main aspects of non-binary representation emerge: identity exploration, social interactions, legal and institutional challenges, body image and presentation, community and activism, intersectionality, and media representation. Benjamin's conflicts depict the difficulties experienced by non-binary people, including their issues with society expectations and preconceptions. The analysis sheds light on how Benjamin represents non-binary identity. Their representation emphasises the complexity and difficulties faced by non-binarypeople, emphasising the significance of tolerance and acceptance in literature. The consequences of this research include encouraging a more inclusive society and developing specialised support networks for non-binary people in social services and healthcare.
