The Correlation between Pronunciation Anxiety and Motivation toward Speaking Ability of Undergraduate EFL Students
This study focused on examining the correlation between pronunciation anxiety and motivation toward speaking ability of students in the English Department at Mulawarman University. The Researcher employed a quantitative method, specifically a casual-comparative research design. Fifty participants from the second semester of the English Department at Mulawarman University took part in this study. Two instruments were used for data collection: a questionnaire (Measure of Pronunciation Anxiety and Pronunciation Motivation Questionnaire) and a speaking ability test. This study revealed that most of students are in moderate level in MPA and only 1 students are in high level in MPA. On the other hand none of students are in low level in PMQ but most of students are in moderate level in MPQ. The result also showed that positive correlation between speaking ability and motivation with the sig 2 tailed 0.011 < 0.05. Negative correlation also showed in the result between pronunciation anxiety and speaking ability with the sig 2 tailed 0.028 < 0.05 . It meant that when students not feel anxious with their pronunciation then their speaking ability will increase and vice versa. According to the Model Summary, 20.3% of students’ speaking ability was influenced by pronunciation anxiety and motivation, while the remaining 79.7% was influenced by other factors not covered in this research. Furthermore, the results indicated a significant influence of pronunciation anxiety and motivation on students’ speaking ability (Ha was accepted). The table coefficient demonstrated that both independent it means that there is a significant influence between pronunciation anxiety and motivation towards students’ speaking ability. The result of the table coefficient showed that both the independent variables influence speaking ability. Pronunciation anxiety p-value 0.014 < 0.05 and motivation 0.020 < 0.05.
