EXPLORING TEXT GENRE PREFERENCES, READING INTEREST, AND READING COMPREHENSION OF THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS AT MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY

This study is aimed to know the text genre preferences of the fourth semester English Department students at Mulawarman University, to know about their reading comprehension, find out about their reading interest, and find out if there’s any relationship between students’ text genre preferences to their reading comprehension and their reading interest. This study was a quantitative research study. The sample of this study was the fourth-semester students English Department at Mulawarman University with a total of 54 students. To gather the data, two questionnaires were given to collect students’ genre preferences and to find out about their reading interests. Meanwhile to know about their reading comprehension, the result of their reading test from reading class was used. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The results of the analysis show that 76% of the students chose factual genre as their genre preference and only 24% of the students chose literary genre as their preference. The students have a high reading comprehension as their average score for their reading comprehension is 76.78, and the students have a moderate reading interest as their average score for their reading interest is 61.9. The results of students’ text genre preference to their reading comprehension and reading interest show that both genres, factual and literary, almost have the same reading interest score, factual students got 62.8 and literary students got 59.2, and as for their reading comprehension, factual genre students got 79.6, meanwhile literary students got 68. In conclusion, students who prefer factual genres tend to have higher reading comprehension and reading interest scores compared to those who prefer literary genres.
