Black Women's Oppression in Starr Carter Character of Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give Novel
This study aims to analyze the dimensions of oppression in the main character, Starr Carter in The Hate U Give novel by Angie Thomas. The researcher analyzed the oppressions through the characterization of the characters that experience the oppressions in the novel. The researcher uses the theory of dimensions of oppressions and characterization theory to analyze this research. This research is a qualitative descriptive that uses a mimetic approach as the research method. The result of this research shown there are three dimensions of oppression that portrayed in the novel through the main character’s perspective. The first oppression is economical dimension. The main cause of this dimension is separate social classification such as the poverty, free-wage labor and capitalism. In this case, the main character experienced the economical dimension based on social distinction that are reflected in the environment which affects to the main character. Second, political dimension forbids black women to have an equal education, freedom of speech and lack of equal treatment in criminal justice system. The data shown the main character experiences the oppression based on inability of black women for having a freedom of speech and having an equal education. The last oppression is ideological dimension which is related to the negative stereotypes of black women. This classification such as separation, supremacy and harassment.
