THE TRIPARTITE PSYCHE OF JOHN HANCOCK'S PERSONALITY IN HANCOCK FILM
This research focuses on analyzing the personality of a character named John Hancock in a film entitled Hancock which was released in 2008. The analysis uses the tripartite psyche of Sigmund Freud’s theory. The researcher uses a qualitative method and psychological approach in this research. The data are in the form of the scene, dialogue, and action of the main character. John Hancock is the main character in this film. He has a superhuman power endowed with the abilities of flight, invulnerability, and super-strength, but his struggles with alcoholism and recklessness overshadow his powers. He operates as an erratic superhero in Los Angeles, facing public disdain and criticism due to his drunken and thoughtless behavior. Then, he begin to improve himself into a better superhero and embraced moral values. The result of this study indicates that John Hancock’s personality is represented in three components of the psyche namely the id, the ego and the superego, which the id is the most of them shown at the early of the film, the id of John Hancock’s was uncontrollable, illogical, immoral, unethical, drunkard, and erratic. On the other side, John Hancock's ego is prominently characterized by his decision-making and rational thinking throughout the film. However, the superego of John Hancock has behaved himself after he got his punishment in the prison, which shows John Hancock follows the moral value of the superego and becomes a better superhero by saving other people.
