Anxiety is an unpleasant feeling that characterized by symptoms such as fear and worry that can be felt in various levels. It gives a signal to us if something dangerous happens. To cope with anxiety, we need to develop the defense mechanism. This research analyzes Lily Bloom who experiences anxiety in the novel It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover. The purpose of this research is to reveal the types of Lily’s anxiety and how she copes with that by using defense mechanism. This research uses qualitative method. The researcher discovers Lily experiences three types of anxiety. She experiences reality anxiety because the existence of her ex-husband still haunts her. The neurotic anxiety also happens to her because she fears her ex husband anger issues will rise when he spends his time with their daughter. The moral anxiety happens because her ex-husband trying to gaslighted her. To cope with her anxiety, Lily uses regression, suppression, sublimation, and intellectualization as her defense mechanisms.
