Neologism Related to COVID-19 Found in CNN Online Newspaper
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on various aspects of life, including the realm of language. The dissemination of information related to the pandemic has become a primary concern and is accessible through various media, including online newspapers that are available on the internet. The pivotal role of online newspapers in conveying information and developments related to COVID19 has given rise to various new words and terms associated with this pandemic, a phenomenon known as Neologism. This study examined the phenomenon of Neologism using Yule's Word Formation Processes theory. The research observes various categories of word formation processes in online newspaper articles during the period from October to December 2021. The objective of this study is to analyze the formation process of new words related to COVID-19 based on George Yule's theory, with the data source being collected from the CNN.com website. The result of this research showed 16 data of neologism related to COVID-19 that found in CNN Online Newspaper that were divided into word formation processes categories such as 4 data of coinage, 4 data of borrowing, 2 data of compounding, 3 data acronym formation, and 4 data of multiple processes. In this research, the researcher only focused on neologism that formed during the pandemic of COVID19 only. Any word that formed outside during the pandemic of COVID-19 were not included and not going into further discussion. After conducted this research, the researcher concludes that COVID-19 influences new words that formed during the pandemic.
