The Hierarchy of Needs Reflected in Crazy Rich Asians Film
The hierarchy of needs proposes a psychological framework for understanding human motivation through the pursuit of distinct levels of needs. Maslow explains that humans unconsciously fulfill their needs because they are motivated by internal forces that drive them to take action to meet those needs. This theory is the main base for knowing how effort and motivation are correlated when discussing human behavior. This research explores Rachel’s hierarchy of needs through character and characterization in Crazy Rich Asians film (2018). Using qualitative methods, the researcher examines how Rachel fulfills each level of these needs. Rachel effectively meets her physiological needs with a stable job and income. She secures her safety needs through her chosen path and her relationship with her boyfriend. Her love needs are fulfilled by her relationships with her mother, Peik Lin, and Nick Young. However, her pursuit of esteem is challenged as she strives to gain recognition from Nick's family. In her journey towards self-actualization, Rachel remains true to her values and is not affected by external opinions, embodying a self-actualized and authentic individual. The conclusion drawn from this analysis is that Rachel succeeded in fulfilling all of her needs based on Maslow's theory.
