An Analysis of Referring Expression in A Man Called Otto Film
This research is titled “An Analysis of Referring Expression in A Man Called Otto Film”. This referring expression is part of the pragmatic study. This thesis discusses the type of referring expression used by George Yule in the conversation between characters in A Man Called Otto film. This film was published in 2022 and is an adaptation of a Swedish novel with the title A Man Called Ove, written by Fredrik Backman. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the type of referring expression employed in the film. The researcher used qualitative descriptive research methodology and pragmatics approach. The results of this research shows four kinds of referring expressions: pronouns, proper names, definite noun phrases, and indefinite noun phrases. Pronouns can be divided into two, it is a personal pronoun that presents someone and a possessive pronoun to show ownership. Second type is proper names are used to identify people and place, and they might be first name, last name, full name, and other names. Next type is definite nouns consisting of determiners like demonstrative. Last is indefinite noun that refers to the phrase beginning with "a‟ or other indefinite pronoun such as "one‟ or "some‟.
