THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY TEACHING STRATEGIES AT SMP KRISTEN SUNODIA SAMARINDA

The aim of this research is to describe the implementation of English vocabulary teaching strategies. This research is able to describe the problems of implementing English vocabulary teaching strategies. To be more specific, this research aims to describe problem solving in implementing English vocabulary teaching strategies at Sunodia Christian Middle School, Samarinda. In this research, researchers used qualitative descriptive research. Data was obtained from observation, interviews and documentation. The research subjects were two English teachers at SMP Sunodia, Samarinda. The researcher transcribed the data, coded it, and presented it in a qualitative descriptive way. The results of this study, from the observation, indicated that teacher one and two used some strategies to implement English vocabulary. Namely 1) Picture/Video, 2) Online game, 3) Translation, 4) Words clustering, 5) Memorization. However, teachers face two problems in implementing English vocabulary teaching strategies to students: 1) Meaning, 2) Spelling. Next, the teacher overcomes these problems in several ways. For teacher one, do ice-breaking first before starting the lesson. Second, teachers provide evaluations with online activities so that they attract students' attention. Third, the teacher provides extended memorization time and collaborates with other students to help their friends memorize. Fourth, teachers increase motivation by providing additional grades as rewards. For teacher two, first the teacher invites students to stretch and sing. Second, teachers present online games to arouse student motivation. Third, the teacher encourages students to raise their hands and ask questions. Fourth, teachers create groups so that their friends can help other students by peer teaching. Fifth, the teacher asks them to borrow from the library or share with other friends. In summary, researchers found that English vocabulary teaching strategies were implemented in several ways. However, this raises several problems for students. Therefore, teachers could find other ways to apply in several aspects such as differences in the abilities of each student and school control over the number of required extracurricular activities.
