Family Traditions in Modern Society Represented in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians Novel
This research discusses the family traditions represented by the main characters Eleanor Young and Rachel Chu in the Crazy Rich Asians novel. The purposes of this research are to identify the aspect of postmodernism through family tradition. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research methodology and a postmodernism approach with reference to Jean Francois Lyotard as the expert. The results of this study show that Eleanor Young as one of the characters in the novel represents family tradition. In Eleanor's practice of tradition, as a Singaporean Chinese, growing up in a society that prioritizes group interests over individual interests makes Eleanor's character a person who cares more about family and upholds traditional values. There are five family traditions represented by the main character that indicate aspects of postmodernism. These traditions are the extended family, the superior role of parents, lineage and clan, collectivism, and long-term orientation. These traditions open Rachel Chu's mind and perspective on Singapore society that in a developed and modern country, there are still people who still maintain traditional values in their lives.
