Speech Abnormalities of Schizophrenic Main Character's Utterances in The Soloist Film
This study examines speech abnormality in people with schizophrenia as portrayed by Nathaniel Ayers in The Soloist film. This study used a qualitative method and used a psycholinguistics approach. The dialogues of Nathaniel Ayers in Joe Wright's film The Soloist include various speech abnormalities that were used as the data. There are five of speech abnormalities in people with schizophrenia found in the film. First, poverty of speech which shows when Ayers tended to respond to questions with brief and lacking detailed answers. Second, weakening of goals which arise when Ayers provides lengthy answers while staying on the main topic. Third is looseness including derailment where his thoughts and speech strayed from the conversation's main topic, and tangentiality which is characterized by incoherent or spontaneous responses. Fourth, Ayers showed perseveration of ideas by frequently repeating the same words or topics. And fifth, he experienced distractibility from external stimuli that results in interrupting his thoughts and causing him to shift topics momentarily during conversation.
