This research is entitled Expressive Speeh Act in Up Film. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of expressive speech acts and the use of expressive speech acts toward the characters. The design of the research was qualitative design. The data of the research were the words, phrases, and sentences uttered by Mr. Fredricksen and Russell's characters that contained expressive speech acts. The data were collected by taking the dialogue and conversation that were uttered by Mr. Fredricksen and Russell. Then, the researcher highlighted the
words, phrases, and sentences that had been identified as a type of expressive speech act. The result of the research shows the types of expressive speech acts uttered by the characters that the researcher found during analyzing through the dialogues from the film and its script based on Searle’s and Vanderveken’s theory, those are expressive of apologize, thank, complaint, lament, protest, compliment, praise, welcome, and greet. There are no types of expressive speech acts such as expressive of congratulate, condole, deploring, and boast. This research shows the use of expressive speech acts by the characters based on Yule’s theory. It was found that several direct speech acts and indirect speech acts were used depending
on the situation and conditions of the conversation such as depending on the emotional situation, age, participant or social status.
