The Referring Expression in Step Up Film Script: A Pragmatics Analysis
This study analyzes the referring expressions used in Step Up film. The purposes of this study are to discover the type of referring expressions and the meaning of referring expressions used in the Step Up film. The approach employed in this study is the pragmatic analysis that focuses on the use of language based on personal use and the context behind the use of language. The result of this research shows that there are four types of referring expressions found in Step Up film. The types found are proper nouns, definite noun phrase, indefinite noun phrase, and pronoun. Among the 376 referring expressions found, there are 31 proper nouns, 70 definite noun phrase, 10 indefinite noun phrase, and 265 pronouns. While the meaning of the referring expressions varied based on the context of the scene. The researcher also finds that in the use of referring expressions, there are many indications can be identified such as politeness, bald on record, and verbal discrimination towards the addressee.
