Politeness strategies play an important role in avoiding the problems in this research. There are two purposes of the research in this thesis. First, to analyze the kinds of politeness strategies used by the main characters in the film. Second, to identify the factors of choosing certain politeness strategies used by the main characters in the film. This study uses a qualitative method and refers to the theory of Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies applied by the main characters in Bad Boys for Life film. The researcher found four types of politeness strategies: bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. In the use of politeness strategies, both characters predominantly use bald-on record. Besides that, the researcher also reveals the factors of choosing certain politeness strategies used by the main characters in the film. Among them are payoffs and the circumstances: sociological variables.
