The Correlation between Information Literacy Self-Efficacy and Fake News Awareness among Students’ fifth semester on Digital Literacy Course
The topic of information literacy and its relation to the importance of using fake news awareness to reduce the spread of fake news on the internet or any media is increasing as the digital era continues to rapidly develop in the last ten years. Most of the study is focused only on information literacy nor fake news. However, these studies have never tried to look at other elements that might be contribute such as fake news awareness, which is also one of information literacy’s related elements it is information literacy self-efficacy. This study aimed to find out whether there is any significant correlation between students’ Information literacy self-efficacy correlated with their fake news awareness. This study used a quantitative-correlational design with the Pearson correlation coefficient to analyze and interpret the data. The population of this study are students’ 5th batch 2021 semester who is currently ongoing in the Digital Literacy course. The sample was selected randomly to be researched which consists of 50 students from batch 2021 class A, B and C. The instruments that were used are Information literacy self-efficacy and Fake news awareness questionnaire. There are three main findings of this study which are taken by answering each research questions. First, the overall mean score shows that most of the students has moderate level for both their information literacy and fake news awareness. For the details, the students’ have both low-level and high-level categorized of Information literacy self-efficacy. It shown that students’ have most confidence and competence in defining the information they need and most difficulties in Interpreting, synthesizing and using the information. Second, the students’ have a moderate level of Fake news awareness. It shown that students’ attitude in the situation of determining news and giving action to share news is at the highest level. Meanwhile, the students’ intention of verifying the validation of news before sharing is at the lowest level. Finally, the correlation between Information Literacy Self-Efficacy (X) and Fake News Awareness (Y) shown that there was a significant correlation between both of these variables and the strength of the relationship was categorized as a low positive correlation, r (27) = .34, p = .016.
