Lacanian Psychoanalysis in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
This research discusses the portrayal of Lacanian psychoanalysis theory of three Orders where the unconscious is deliberately formed because of the corresponding chain of all signifiers in the Imaginary, Symbolic, and Real Order in Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde novel. In this research, the researcher focuses on identifying the three Orders which depicted through characterization of the main characters. This research uses a qualitative research method with psychoanalysis approach. The analysis results show the portrayal of all three Lacanian Orders by the main characters Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In Imaginary Order, Dr. Jekyll misrecognizes himself to be consisting of two separate natures— good and evil, forming a false sense of duality, instead of owning himself as one and whole. After that, in Symbolic Order, Dr. Jekyll’s delusive image of duality follows and becomes worse through the signifiers of symbolic and Mirror Stage, causing the creation of Mr. Hyde until they fall into an endless loop of feeling lack and striving for false fulfillment of desire. Lastly, in the Real Order, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde face the inexpressive nature of Real that brings end to the delusive image and false fulfillment with its inevitable impossibility, which resulting death for them
