Betty Friedan’s Feminism Concepts in the Main Character Hester Prynne in Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter Novel
The value of feminism was not only recorded in real life but also in literature. As a reflection of real life, some novels also contained the phenomenon of feminism, one of which was The Scarlet Letter, a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The purpose of writing this research was to identify the representation of the concepts of feminism in the main character Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter novel. This research used feminism theory, a literary theory that examined women in various aspects of social life, such as political, cultural, economic, and other aspects. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research method and feminist approach. Based on the findings, the research results showed Hester Prynne as the main character in the novel reflected the representation of three concepts of feminism. These representations were The New Women, The Educated Women, and The Happy Women. In this case, these representations were characterized by Hester Prynne's character mostly in indirectly through external appearance that were look, hairstyle and clothes, through the action, speech and also through environment that were human environment and physical surrounding. This was evident from the way Hawthorne developed the character of Hester Prynne in feminism concepts in The Scarlet Letter novel.
