Gender Inequality Shown by Characters in Matilda Novel by Roald Dahl
This study aims to analyze gender inequality depicted in Matilda novel by Roald Dahl using Judith Lorber's theory of gender inequality that talks about the different treatments towards women and men. This study is based on a feminist
approach and qualitative methods. The data analyzed in this novel includes sentences, dialogues, and narrations that shows gender inequality by the characters in Matilda novel by Roald Dahl. The results of the analysis shows gender inequality based on Judith Lorber's theory which is divided into three aspects: economic aspects, social aspects and educational aspects. In the economic aspect is when Matilda was seen in capable to continue Mr. Wormwood's business. In the social aspect is when Matilda is seen as useless and cannot compete with Michael. In educational aspect is can be seen when Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood insisted that it was enough for Matilda to beautify herself instead of pursue a higher education. Then, the political aspect is not found in this novel because this novel does not lead to a specific political situation.
