The research aims to analyze anxiety and defense mechanism of the main character in the Night novel. The research used qualitative research for analysis by applying psychoanalysis theory from Sigmund Freud's focused on anxiety and defense mechanism theory for completing the research. The source of data was taken from https://www.pdfdrive.com/night-oprahs-book-club-e.html which the data based on the narration and dialogue from the Night novel. This research revealed that Eliezer had experienced anxiety through showing based on the characterization theory and he used defense mechanisms as a coping strategy to reduce anxiety. The result of this research; reality anxiety (fear of the external world), moral anxiety (feeling ashamed according to societal norms), and neurotic anxiety (unconscious fear). The defense mechanism that Eliezer used was turning against the self, denial, projection, and reaction formation to cope with his anxiety. The conclusion is that Eliezer uses a defense mechanism to overcome his anxiety in various instances that he encounters.
