The Binary Opposition of Personality Archetype in Novel Coraline by Neil Gaiman (2002)
Archetype is a sequence of subconscious mind constructs to explain archetypal images so that it is possible to explain mental pictures of a culture that are very similar to other cultures, which are then linked. This research aims to find archetypes in the novel Coraline characters and compare their personality. This research is conducted with qualitative research. First, the characters are examined using Mark and Pearson archetype theory to discover the personality archetype. The second examines the personality archetype using Claude Levi-Strauss's binary opposition theory to find the contrasting personality. The data source in this research is a novel titled Coraline by Neil Gaiman. The data in this research were words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and speech containing characterization, portraying each character's personality archetype. Based on the analysis, the researcher found eight out of 13 archetypes in the novel Coraline. This research shows 8 archetypes: Hero, Explorer, Caregiver, Sage, Ruler, Innocent, Jester, and Villain. In binary opposition, there are Care-Neglect (Caregiver), Order-Chaos (Ruler), Humor-Serious (Jester), Brave-Coward (Hero), Innocence-Sinful (Innocent), Curious-Apathetic (Explorer), Wisdom-Careless (Sage), and Evil-Good (Villain).
