THE CORRELATION BETWEEN LEARNER AUTONOMY AND INTRINSIC MOTIVATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING OF THE STUDENTS ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT MULAWARMAN UNIVERSITY

A., and Advisor II: Dr. Istanti Hermagustiana, M.A. In learning a foreign language each learner has a different way to conduct their responsibilities in learning patterns. It includes about their responsibilities and motivation in learning foreign language. The purposes of this study were to find out the correlation between autonomy and intrinsic motivation of the fourth semester of English Department students at Mulawarman University academic year 2021/2022. The design
of this study was correlational design within quantitative approach. The sample of this study was 36 Fourth Semester students of English Department of Mulawarman University in academic year 2021/2022. The autonomy questionnaire was adopted from The Scale of Language Learner Autonomy and motivation questionnaire was adopted by revised AMTB. The data of this study were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Formula. The analysis data result of autonomy questionnaire showed that fourth semester English Department students’ autonomy level found was 0.361 (Mean = 3.61) it considered as ‘approaching autonomy’ level. This result implied that participants had sufficient knowledge and supporting factors to increase their autonomy in learning but
not in high rate level of use. The analysis data in the second variable, motivation subscale showed that the average mean score from students’ motivation was 0.413 (Mean = 4.13), it deemed as ‘high degree of motivation’. It can be concluded it was discovered that integrative motivation surpassed instrumental motivation in students learning English. As a result, most students exhibited a high level of integrative and instrumental desire to study English. The analysis data of the Pearson Product Formula result is (0.490) it indicated that there was a positive and fair correlation. Positive correlation means there is a positive association between two variables as both variables when an increase in one variable lead to rise in one another. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and for Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This result meant that students’ autonomy and motivation can be increased positively in linear manner.
However, the correlation is not high just in fair level. Because of there are many other factors that affect in the development of learner autonomy and motivation in learning.
