RESEARCH REPORT EXPLORING THE FACTORS AND STRATEGIES USED TO COPE WITH SPEAKING ANXIETY OF EFL STUDENTS DURING ONLINE LEARNING

Speaking anxiety is one of the barriers to learning English and a problem that is frequently encountered among EFL students. This issue also hinders EFL students' ability to communicate in English. This research aims to investigate the factors and strategies used to cope with the speaking anxiety of EFL students during online learning. This study employed a qualitative approach with the case study as the research design. The data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews and purposive sampling was used to select four students from the English Department. The findings of this study revealed that the factors affecting the students' public speaking anxiety through online learning and the factors were (learner inhibition, language barrier, lack of vocabulary, and teacher’s lack of pedagogical). Moreover, the factors were overcome by several strategies (preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, and peer seeking). Additionally, this study also gives an insight into how students implement the strategies by using several specific techniques about strategies that EFL students use to overcome their speaking anxiety; a) Understanding the topic, Focus, Intonation, Read Notes, Practicing more, Practicing with Friends and Family. These are some preparations during conducting speaking performances that students use, it is an essential technique and the most powerful way to reduce EFL students speaking anxiety during online learning. :
