Stereotypes Portrayed by Teenage Characters in Mean Girls Film
This thesis discusses about stereotype and its functions that contained in Mean Girls film. Stereotype refers to a cognitive structure that includes knowledge, beliefs, and expectations of some human social groups. It is a schematic, standardized image, conception, or opinion of individual members of a culture or group about some social phenomenon or object, usually emotionally charged and having stability. The research aims to describe how stereotype are represented in Mean Girls film, using stereotypes theory by David J. Schneider. This research design is using qualitative research and sociology of literature approach. The researcher also collects the data based on the utterances, dialogues, or scenes from Mean Girls that indicate with stereotypes. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher found there are nine data that indicated with kinds of stereotype. The kinds of stereotypes depicted in the film are gender, race and ethnicity, age, physical features, language, occupation and socioeconomic status, and other categories of stereotypes. This research also contained with three data for the function of stereotypes namely individual and social function of stereotypes. From all the kinds and functions of stereotype, the film is dominantly conducted with gender, race and ethnicity, and individual functions of stereotype and it shows by the dialogues and actions.
