ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN CHARACTER'S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS IN JENNIFER NIVEN'S ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES NOVEL
This research focused on the hierarchy of needs that Theodore Finch fulfilled as the main character in Jennifer Niven's All the Bright Places novel, which was published in 2015. Theodore Finch, the main character, is an unconventional student who is interested in death, has a history of suicidal thoughts, and has an extreme moods changes. Therefore, this research aims to find out Finch's fulfilled needs by using the hierarchy of needs theory of Abraham Maslow to reveal fulfilled needs of Finch. Furthermore, in this research, the researcher uses a qualitative research method. The data resulted from sentences, paragraphs, and dialogue that portrayed the needs of Finch in the novel. Theoretically, there are five stages in the hierarchy of needs, and they are physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization. The findings showed that Finch's characteristics are a caring person, a brave young man, an overthinker, considerate and protective person, a sincere person, an outspoken man, a persistent person, and a smart young man. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that Finch successfully fulfilled his needs until the fourth stage: physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, and esteem needs.
