Racial Segregation toward the Black People in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013) Film.
This research discusses racial segregation against black people in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom film. The film is based on Nelson Mandela biography. This film takes the story of Apartheid era in South Africa. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom portrays Mandela’s journey to bring equality for black people in South Africa. This research aims to analyze the practice of racial segregation that appears in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and also the characters struggle for freedom. The researcher uses the segregation theory by Richard Schaefer and characterization theory by Rimmon-Kenan. This research uses the qualitative method as a research method. In this research, researchers took data from dialogue of characters and scenes in the film. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher found there are four kinds of segregation experienced by black. Most of the segregation they experienced stemmed from Apartheid law at the time. The kinds of segregation depicted in the film are segregation in housing, voting, public transportation, and employment. The character expresses racial segregation through the character’s action, speech, appearance, and environment. There are two forms of struggle carried out by Mandela and black people; mass demonstrations and boycotts in the film.
