The Portrayal of Patriarchal System to Paikea in Whale Rider Film
The patriarchal system is one of the gender issues that easily found in literary works, such as novel, drama and film. One of the films that portrays the patriarchal system is Whale Rider film. The purposes of this study are to find out what types of patriarchal systems experienced by Paikea, and how her struggles against the patriarchal system in Whale Rider film. This study employs a qualitative method to describe the data. In addition, the researcher employs a feminist literary criticism approach and the theory of patriarchy by Allan G. Johnson to describe the kinds of patriarchal system experienced by Paikea. The results of the study show that Paikea experiences injustice from the patriarchal system adopted by her grandfather. The kinds of patriarchal system experienced by Paikea are male domination, male centeredness and the obsession with control which prevented Paikea in achieving her dream to become the next leader of the Maori tribe. As the main female character who is tough and brave, Paikea struggles to get equal education, equal liberty and equal rights. Therefore, Paikea’s struggle managed to break the patriarchal system that limited her.
