AN ANALYSIS OF SPEAKING ANXIETY EXPERIENCED BY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT STUDENTS WHO JOINED THE ENGLISH TALK PROGRAM HELD BY RRI PRO 2 SAMARINDA
In the context of English as a foreign language, there are difficulties faced by the students during the speaking activity caused by some factors, such as speaking anxiety. It is important to know what factors cause anxiety and its solution to improve students’ performance. This study aims to analyze the causes of speaking anxiety experienced by four Announcers comes from the English Department of Mulawarman University and its solution(s). This research is a qualitative phenomenological analysis study. Data collection is conducted by using a questionnaire and open-ended interviews. The result shows four main factors of speaking anxiety: lack of communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, English Talk rules, and test anxiety. The students ' solutions to overcome speaking anxiety are positive affirmation, asking for help from the main announcer, and advantage preparation. Therefore, preparation and practice are the best ways to avoid speaking anxiety. The results indicate the need for other ways besides the announcers’ solution to reduce their speaking anxiety
