A motivated student will participate in class activities and the learning process by doing as instructed, doing assigned assignments, and participating in discussions. The purpose of this study was to find the level of motivation for learning English and find out whether the dominant motivation in learning English at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Samarinda. This study followed quantitative research. The participants of this study were 33 students of the second year. The instrument used questionnaire consists of 20 items adopted from Gardner’s Attitude Motivational Test Battery (AMTB) In form of a 5 Likert scale. The result shows that the second-year students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Samarinda had high level of Intrinsic motivation with mean 3.69 and standard deviation 0.82 and while level of extrinsic motivation is high with mean 3.66 and standard deviation 0.81. The dominant level of motivation between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation found that the student’s motivation in learning English leans slightly more towards intrinsic motivation. The researcher suggests that teachers should be aware of students' motivation to improve their learning experience and
develop effective lesson plans. Students should understand their intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, which can help them increase their motivation and improve their English language learning.
