The Portrayal of Prejudice in Walter Dean Myer's Monster
This study aims to analyze the prejudice experienced by the main character Steve Harmon that is portrayed in Monster novel. Gordon Allport’s scale of prejudice is used to analyze what are the degrees of prejudice Steve Harmon experiences in the novel. The scale covers five different degrees ranging from least harmful such as antilocution, avoidance, and discrimination to the violence ones such as physical attack and extermination. This study also focuses on the theory proposed by Simpson to analyze the types of responses of the main character towards prejudice, namely, avoidance, aggression, acceptance, and reform. This research used qualitative approach. The data used in this research are dialogues, utterances, narrations of the characters in Monster novel related to the research questions. The result of the study found that Steve Harmon as the main character in the Monster novel experiences heavily prejudice in antilocution and discrimination degrees and gives avoidance, aggression, and acceptance type of response.
