THE CORRELATION OF STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE USE OF LEARNING VIDEO ON YOUTUBE AND SPEAKING ABILITY AT SMK FARMASI SAMARINDA
Students’ perception of the use of learning video on YouTube might affect to the students speaking ability. This study was conducted to analyze the correlation between students' perception and students’ speaking ability. The purposes of this study are: (1) to find out the student perception of the use of social media YouTube for learning English, (2) the students’ speaking ability, (3) the correlation between students’ perception of the use of YouTube and their speaking ability for learning English. The researcher utilized a correlational design in this study. The population of this study was taken from the eleventhgrade students at the SMK Farmasi Samarinda in the academic year 2022/2023, whereas this study used 58 students as the sample. The instruments of this study were students perception questionnaire and score documentation of speaking. This study used an analysis of Pearson Product Moment correlation to find out the result of the hypotheses.
The results of this study showed that first, based on the calculation of students’ perception questionnaire; it was shown that the level of students’ perception of the eleventh-grade students at SMK Farmasi Samarinda in the academic year 2022/2023 was in the positive category (55% at the sample). Second, the analysis of speaking score documentation shown that the level of the speaking scores of the eleventh-grade students’ was in the very good category (84% at the sample). Third, based on the data of students’ perception and speaking ability, it was shown that r-value is 0.053 with a significance value of .692 < 0.05, so Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It was assumed that students’ perception correlated with their speaking ability.
Finally, the use of YouTube can reduce their anxiety when learning English, motivate them to learn English and can make them better able to understand the material contained in the YouTube videos that have been given by their teacher.
