The Representation of Archetypes through Characters in Life of Pi Novel
This study discusses the representation of archetypes through the characters’ experiences in Life of Pi novel by Yann Martel. The representation is seen by the existence of archetypal meanings and mythos based on Northrop Frye’s archetype theory. Dialogues and narrations relating to the discussion of archetypes worked as the data of this study. They were collected from Life of Pi novel by Yann Martel, a harvest international edition published in 2001. The research design of this study was qualitative with archetypal approach. The results of this study revealed that archetypal meanings were represented through the existence of: (1) apocalyptic imagery, where divine world and mineral world appeared as the central focus in the life of Life of Pi novel; (2) Followed religions, and (3) demonic imagery, where sinister and menacing traits of the living creatures and the nature took part in creating tragedy in the novel. At the same time, the mythos represented within the two imagery was mythos of autumn:tragedy, that portrayed the unwanted reality of Pi’s character and other characters, but they should face eventually.
