THE SELF AND OTHER IN TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT ME NOVEL
Colonialism is a phenomenon that arises due to the existence of binary opposition created by the colonizer to exploit the colonized. The binary opposition between the West and the East then gives the portrayal of unequal relation of power. Postcolonialism appears as a result of colonialism. It gives a way in seeing the relationship of the colonizer and colonized. Specifically, this thesis discusses
about the reflection of the Self and the Other toward the Anglo-Australian and Lebanese Muslim characters. The purposes of this thesis are to identify the reflections of the Self (the colonizer) and the Other (the colonized) and describe the way of the author in describing it in Anglo-Australian and Lebanese Muslim characters in Ten Things I Hate about Me novel. In this thesis, the researcher used qualitative research method and postcolonialism approach. Further, the theories that are used in this analysis is Said‟s the representation of the Self and the Other and Kenan‟s theory of characterization. The results of this thesis show the reflections of the Self in Anglo-Australian characters that find in the novel are rational, normal, and virtuous. Meanwhile, The reflections of the Other in Lebanese Muslim characters are irrational, depraved, and different. In this case, the findings show that those representations are characterized in Anglo-Australian and Lebanese Muslim characters entirely through indirect presentation.
