Language is a system used by human being, as member of large social group, to express themselves and to communicate. This research was conducted to give knowledge, especially in part deixis as part of pragmatics to help understanding the deixis and how to detect deixis used as tool to point out the meaning of utterances. Therefore, the researcher was interested in analyzing three types of deixis and the dominant type of deixis found in The Pursuit of Happyness movie script, according to Yule’s explanation. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative as its design. The purpose of this study are: 1) To determine what types of deixis that are presented in The Pursuit of Happyness movie script.; 2) To determine the dominant type of deixis that appear in The Pursuit of Happyness movie script. In this research, the researcher used Miles and Huberman (2014) in analyzing the data. In this research, the researcher analyzed three types of deixis classified based on their criteria; person deixis indicated the participant in the event of utterances happened, spatial deixis indicated the place of the event occurred, and temporal deixis indicated the time of speech event used in the event. The researcher
found out the most dominant deixis is person deixis with 1.502 deictic expressions. The suggestion from the researcher were for student and lecturer should learn deixis as the meant to understand and improve their understanding in deixis analysis and capability to understand grammar, especially about pronoun. For the future researcher, by referring to this research, the next researcher can conduct theresearch to be more specific about deixis.
