This study deals with illocutionary acts and context in the main character’s utterances in Lady Bird’s movie. The objectives of the study were (1) to find out the types of illocutionary acts in the main character’s utterances in Lady Bird’s movie; (2) how the context underlies the illocutionary act presented in the main character’s utterances in Lady Bird’s movie. Conversation analysis by Have (1999) was used with descriptive qualitative approach to describe and analyze the utterances taken from the main character in Lady Bird’s movie. The data was obtained from the recording, and the transcript was examined to determine the main character’s utterances consisted of illocutionary acts. The data was then classified using Searle’s (1976) theory of illocutionary act types. The context underlying the illocutionary acts presented is analyzed with the SPEAKING grid by Hymes’ (1974) theory. The researcher concluded two findings of this research. First, the utterances that contained illocutionary acts are 131 utterances. Four types of illocutionary acts are found: Representatives with 48 utterances, Directives with 31 utterances, Commissives with 14 utterances, and Expressives with 38 utterances. Second, all the elements of the SPEAKING grid used to analyze context are found. The setting, participants, ends, act of sequence, key, instrumentality, norms, and genre are included in the movie. It is proven that context heavily influences the interpretation and inference of utterances. This study shows that illocutionary act types found in the movie and context cannot be separated in interpreting illocutionary act types shown in the main character’s utterances in the movie.
