UNTANGLING DISABILITY PORTRAYAL AND DISABILITY LANGUAGE IN ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS FOR STUDENTS OF SMALB-C (INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY) IN INDONESIA

This study untangles disability portrayal (DP) and disability language (DL) in three English textbooks for Students with Intellectual Disability (SWID). This research’s primary objectives are to know how both variables are represented and delivered in the three textbooks. The current research was a qualitative study. Therefore, it used content analysis to collect the data from three English textbooks for SMALB-C published by Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic Indonesia in 2016 and 2017. Several criteria are applied to select the textbook. QCAmap, which applied a content analysis procedure, was employed as an analysis technique in this research. This research has undergone several processes to confirm the data's trustworthiness using investigator triangulation within inter-coder and intra-coder agreement checks. Four categories from DP in current research align with previous research: first is Human Right, Social Model, Incluison, and Accessibility (HRSMIA). Second is Daily Routines, Roles,and Social Lives (DRRSL). Third is Variety of Human Emotions and Feelings (VHEF). Last is Intersectional Diversity (INDI). The most frequent appearance of DP category in three books is DRRSL followed by HRSMIA, INDI, and VHEF as the lowest frequent. Meanwhile, four categories from DL namely Person First Language (PFL). Second, No Pejorative, Euphemism, or Ableist Language (PEAL). Third, Simple and Concise Language (SCL), and lastly Easy Read (ER) all are overlapping to confirm and refute the previous study. The most frequent appearance of DL category in three books is SCL then followed by ER, PEAL, and the least frequent is PFL. Lastly, this study provided implications for future research and suggestions to improve disability conceptions in a broader context, issue, and other media.
