Reading is one of the skills that is important to learn. This study focuses on students' difficulties in comprehending reading text. The purposes of this study are to describe difficulties, the factors causing the difficulties, and how students coped with the difficulties. The method of this study uses a qualitative descriptive design with the type of case study, reading comprehension test and interview as the instruments. The subjects of this study were 33 students of VIII C at SMPN 5 Samarinda in the 2021/2022 academic years, with six students as the informants. Based on the result of the reading comprehension test, the most errors in answering the questions occurred in making inference meanwhile in interview session, the author concluded that there are three difficulties faced by students in reading comprehension: 1. difficulty in understanding the meaning of the text; 2. difficulty in processing the information of the text, 3. difficulty in concentrating. There are six factors causing the difficulty: 1. limited vocabulary, 2. technical errors, 3. Lack of reading strategies, 4. lack of motivation in learning English, 5. lack of family role in learning, 6. lack of reading interest. And students coped with the difficulties they faced in three ways: 1. translating; 2. asking for help; and 3. guessing the meaning of the text. It can be concluded that the difficulties experienced by students are based on internal and external factors. It is suggested that teachers should build students motivation in reading, teach students how to think critically so that they can make inferences from the text they have read, and parents should pay more attention to their children in the learning process.
