Anxiety is a representation of human emotional reactions. Meanwhile, one of the mechanisms that humans have when experiencing anxiety is the defense mechanism. Defense mechanisms are a way for some humans to overcome anxiety, stress, and even depression that they experience when facing a conflict. This research focuses on the defense mechanisms strategy used by Kevin's character to overcome the various kinds of anxiety he was experiencing, which is shown in the novel entitled We Need To Talk About Kevin. The theory used to examine Kevin's character is the theory of anxiety and defense mechanisms by Sigmund Freud. The researchers of this study found that Kevin experienced all types of anxiety. There are three types of anxiety: realistic anxiety, moral anxiety, and neurotic anxiety. Meanwhile, the type of anxiety that Kevin experiences most often is neurotic anxiety. Whereas for defense mechanism, Kevin only uses four out of fifteen defense mechanism strategies to deal with his anxiety. Namely, displacement, turning against the self, isolation, and repression. The defense mechanism strategy that Kevin uses the most is displacement.
