A Semiotics Analysis of Film Primer Using Charles S. Peirce's Theory
Film directors use signs or symbols to communicate their message. Signs are the traditional perception of meaning, and semiotic is a theory that generates or decomposes meaning. This research aims to find the signs and to describe their meaning from the film Primer directed by Shane Carruth. This research is qualitative research and utilizes Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotics theory. The data source in this research from a film titled Primer directed by Shane Carruth. The data in this research is in the form of screenshots of a few scenes containing important signs. Based on the analysis, the researcher found six important signs in the film Primer. Those are square-shaped windows, square shaped camera frame, Abe on the roof and Aaron sitting on the bench, Abe’s last name, Abe and Aaron white collared shirt and Abe and Aaron black sweaters. The researcher utilized Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic concept to find the meaning of the signs. The results of this research show the signs in the film Primer and the signs' meaning.
