EFL Pre-Service Teachers' Experience of Zoom Cloud Meeting as Online Learning Media
Teaching practicum has been considered as one of the most important and influential stages in teacher education. Usually the teaching practicum performed offline in class, but it shifted into online learning due to pandemic of Covid-19. Thus, the per-service teachers must understand on how to implement online teaching. Synchronous online teaching is one of the methods that can support online teaching because it is involves a real-time live session through video conference. One of the video conferencing applications for synchronous online teaching is Zoom Cloud Meeting. This study aimed: (1) to elaborate pre-service teachers’ difficulties and solution in using Zoom; (2) to find out pre-service teachers’ perception in using Zoom. this study used case study qualitative research design. The participants of this study were two pre-service teachers of English Language Education Program at Mulwarman University who were selected with specific criteria. Stimulated Recall Interview (SRI) and in-depth interview were used as the instruments for this study.
The result showed various difficulties were faced by the pre-service teachers in using Zoom. the difficulties were from bad internet connection that causes students’ lack of participation and bad audio quality, difficult to communicate with students, lack of a quiet environment, and difficult to access the feature in Zoom at the beginning. To overcome those difficulties, the pre-service teachers shared the video recordings during the teaching process with students, repeated the explanation, wrote the explanation on the chat box, waited until the students answer back, and moved to a quiet place, searched on the internet using the features in Zoom. Although the EFL pre-service teachers faced some difficulties in using Zoom during the online teaching practicum, the researcher found the perception of the EFL pre-service teachers that Zoom was useful as an aid for online teaching. It is also found that, the use of Zoom could give easiness for online class. But, Zoom did not give easiness for a clear communication with students. Moreover, the preservice teachers satisfied with the features in Zoom and thought that Zoom was beneficial. After all, not all the participants have the intention to use Zoom again for the future class because it need a lot of internet quota. Therefore, it is found that the pre-service teachers have the intention to used Zoom for other activities outside the classroom such as seminar, online event, or for communication media with friends.
