A Sociolinguistics Analysis of Language Styles Used by Jo March in "Little Women" Film
Language is the primary tool in the social environment for communication. As a scientific part of linguistics, sociolinguistics examines the relationship between language and the social environment, including language style. Appropriate language styles are essential in a social environment, mainly so that the other person can clearly and precisely catch the speaker's intent clearly and precisely. In addition to social life, language styles are found in literary works, including films. This study aims to analyze the various scales of language style and the factors that influence the use of language style by Jo March, the main character of the Little Women film, directed by Greta Gerwig and released in 2019. The researcher uses the theory of language style by Martin Joos, which classifies language style into five scales: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. The researcher also uses the social factor theory by Janet Holmes, which mentions four factors influencing language style: participants, setting, topic, and function. Furthermore, this research is a sociolinguistics study that uses a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting data, the researcher watched the film, checked and matched it with the script. In this film, 31 data from Jo March's utterances represent Joos’ language style. The researcher found that Jo March uses all of the Joos’ language stylesin her utterances in Little Women film: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. The dominant style that has been used by Jo March is casual. The researcher also found that all of Holmes’ social factors influenced the language style used in Jo March's utterance in the Little Women film: participant, setting, topic, and function. The dominant factor that has influenced the use of language style by Jo March is the participant factor.
