A Deconstruction Analysis Towards the Character of Mr. Pangloss in Voltaire's Candide
This research is concerned with the deconstruction of Mr. Pangloss’ character in Voltaire’s Candide novel. This research aimed to describe his character and deconstruct his privileged meaning using the determined binary oppositions to find new privileged meaning. This research used a qualitative research design with a descriptive method. The data in this research were quotations, narrations, words, phrases, clauses, sentences, or paragraphs that are related to Mr. Pangloss’s character and obtained by reading the novel. Furthermore, in the analysis, the researcher used Derrida’s deconstruction. Then, his character is deconstructed using the determined binary oppositions of the privileged meaning : optimistic man vs. pessimistic man, idealistic man vs realistic man, smart man vs stupid man, non-discriminative man vs discriminative man, and good man vs evil man. The finding shows that there are five data found in the novel and Mr Pangloss inherited a positive and negative characteristics, thus concluding that Mr. Pangloss privileged had positive and negative character which makes the meaning is not absolute or undecidable.
