This research discussed taboo words as one of the language phenomena studied in sociolinguistics. This phenomenon appeared in the conversation of one of the rich families from the upper class, namely the Thrombey in a film entitled Knives Out. The purpose of this research was to determine the types and functions of the taboo words spoken by members of the Thrombey family. Wardaugh's theory about taboo word became the main theory in this research. The use of taboo words in rich families was triggered by Mr Thrombey’s suicide case which left the families shocked, depressed, and confused. In the end, unstable emotions affected their speech. From the finding, it was known that the Thrombey family used seven types of taboo words. The types were mother-in-law, animal, death, excretion, body function term, religion, and sex terms. Meanwhile, the use of taboo words in their conversation lead to four functions, namely to draw attention to oneself, to show contempt, to be provocative, and to mock authority
Penelitian ini membahas tentang kata-kata tabu yang merupakan salah satu fenomena bahasa yang dipelajari dalam bidang sosiolinguistik. Fenomena bahasa ini muncul dalam percakapan salah satu keluarga kaya dan dari kelas sosial atas yang bernama Thrombey dalam film berjudul Knives Out. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis dan fungsi dari kata-kata tabu yang diucapkan oleh anggota keluarga Thrombey. Teori Wardaugh tentang kata tabu menjadi teori utama dalam penelitian ini. Adapun penggunaan kata tabu dalam keluarga kaya tersebut dipicu oleh adanya kasus bunuh diri Tuan Thrombey yang membuat keluarga shock, depresi, dan bingung. Pada akhirnya, emosi yang tidak stabil mempengaruhi cara mereka berbicara. Dari temuan penelitian ini diketahui bahwa keluarga Thrombey menggunakan tujuh jenis kata tabu. Jenis tersebut antara lain ibu mertua (mother-in-law), binatang (animal), kematian (death), ekskresi (excretion), fungsi alami tubuh (body function term), keagamaan (religion), dan seks (sex terms). Sementara itu, penggunaan kata-kata tabu dalam percakapan mereka mengarah pada empat fungsi, yaitu untuk menarik perhatian orang lain (to draw attention to oneself), untuk menunjukkan penghinaan (to show contempt), untuk memprovokasi (to be provocative), dan untuk mengejek otoritas (to mock authority).
