An Analysis of the Moral Value of the Main Character in The Picture of Dorian Gray novel by Oscar Wilde
This research aims to find out and explain the moral values portrayed in Dorian’s character in The Picture of Dorian Gray novel using the types of moral values theory by Buzan. In addition, a qualitative method was employed to fulfill the objectives of this research. The results showed four of the eleven types of moral values portrayed in The Picture of Dorian Gray novel. The first is humbleness, marked by Dorian's attitude that he still does not feel arrogant when given a compliment. The second is trustworthiness. It is characterized by Dorian's attitude, who always keeps his promises. The third is love and affection, marked by Dorian's love and care for Sybil as someone he loves. The last is thankfulness, marked by Dorian, who always said “thank you” to people who cared and helped him. In this case, the moral values are portrayed in direct and in indirect presentation through narration, speech, and action by the Dorian’s character.
