An Analysis of Racial Discrimination in the Best of Enemies Film
This study aims to find racial discrimination acts in the Best of Enemies film. Specifically, a black female character named Ann Atwatter was analyzedusing the theory of racial discrimination. To get a more in depth analysisresearcher uses three levels of racial discrimination that were coined by Gordon Allport, namely verbal antagonism, avoidance, and segregation. Data obtained from film scenes, dialogues, and film scripts. This research is classified as a qualitative descriptive method, because the data are in the form of dialogues and pictures taken from the Best of Enemies film. This study was used to analyze research data showing that Ann Atwatter, that the result revealed that the first experiences was verbal antagonism which consists of casual slurs, disparaging racial comment, second was next experienced is avoidance consisting of building inferiority and superiority in society, and the last act of racial discrimination experienced was segregation including stigmatizing to other by negative messages and creating stereotype and assume. Those racial discrimination were portrayed in the way of the character’s speech, external appearance and environment in the story.
