A Main Character Analysis Using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory in Sarah Dessen’s The Rest of the Story Novel
This research aimed to analyze the main character in Sarah Dessen’s novel The Rest of the Story named Emma Saylor. The purpose of this research is to find out how the main character needs are depicted using the theory of Hierarchy of Human Needs by Abraham Harold Maslow. This research used qualitative method to answer the research question. The Rest of the Story novel was used in thisesearch as the data source. The data consisted of words, sentences, paragraphs, dialogues, and narration through the novel that showed Emma Saylor’s needs. The esearch’s findings revealed that Emma Saylor was able to depict every level of thehierarchy of needs, such as physiological need, safety need, love and belonginess need, need for self-esteem, and self-actualization need. Despite achieving her goalsn the novel, which might be showcased her self-actualization need, Emma Saylorcannot be regarded a self-actualized person since she does not show all fifteen characteristics of a self-actualized person. She only depicts seven of them: acceptance, problem-centered, peak experience, social interest, profoundnterpersonal relations, discrimination between means and ends, and lastly, sense of humor.
