Everyone on this earth may experience grief. Everyone's grief will be different at different stages. Grief is an unavoidable event, therefore society must find ways to overcome and deal with it. Emily's grief in William Faulkner's short story A Rose for Emily is one of the representations of how a person goes through the stages of grief. This study aimed to analyze the character in William Faulkner's short story A Rose for Emily through the theory of five stages of grief by Kubler-Ross. This study used qualitative research and used the characterization method to understand a character in a narrative work through show and telling by Klarer. Used two theories, namely the five stages of grief according to Kubler-Ross such as anger, denial, bargaining, depression, acceptance and lost attachment behavior, fear of strangers, separation anxiety. All stages and related effects have been experienced by Emily. Emily experiences a state of grief during the story after the death of her father. Emily’s strange behaviors in the story such as when she kills her lover so they could stay together forever are the side effect of her grief in the story. The strange behaviors of her came up as the responses of losing an attachment with her father. Consciously or not, the bereaved people will seek ways in overcoming the grief because they could not stand it after tastes such as pain, fear, sorrow, anxiety.
