Bisexuality Traits of a Male Character in Demian by Hermann Hesse
Bisexuality is known as the sexual orientation of those who are attracted to both sexes. Because the presence of bisexuality has not been completely validated in society, bisexual characters in literary works are often misinterpreted as heterosexual or homosexual only. Therefore, the researcher conducted this thesis that discusses how the traits of bisexuality are portrayed through a male character in Demian by Hermann Hesse. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the traits of bisexuality that are portrayed through the character of Emil Sinclair in the novel. This thesis used the concepts of bisexuality by Ulrich Gooß as the main theory, and the Freudian concept of bisexuality in psychoanalytic theory, sexual orientation, and queer theory as support theories to analyze the traits of bisexuality of the character. The researcher applied the qualitative research method and queer studies as an approach in this thesis. The findings of this research indicated that the bisexual traits of Emil Sinclair, which are heterosexual and homosexual attractions, were portrayed through his interactions with the other characters from how he was attracted to them in the aspect of emotional or physical attractions.
